- "The Recusant-class light destroyers are known for their size and firepower... A feared ship indeed."
- ―Republic Admiral talking about the Recusant-class light destroyer
The Recusant-class light destroyer, also known as the Recusant-class support destroyer, commonly referred to as the Commerce Guild destroyer, and additionally known as the Separatist destroyer, was a starship used by the CIS Navy during the Clone Wars.
Armament[]
The Recusant-class destroyers were light warships with heavy weapons and carried a pair of forward-mounted heavy turbolasers, several turbolaser batteries, and a few heavy cannon batteries. There were also a few point defense laser cannon batteries as well.
Complement[]
The Recusant-class light destroyer was controlled by a small crew and had little storage space, giving it a skeletal appearance. The crew usually consisted entirely of droids, who had a slower reaction time, making the ships more susceptible to crashes into other ships. Because of this, the Recusant-class usually had a biological commander. The Recusants had only two hangers, one starboard and one on the port side, which held a small complement of starfighters. In several places within the ship's superstructure, there were chambers which held deactivated droids. The Recusant could carry up to 40,000 droids, which would be used for boarding missions. Under the ship there was a docking clamp for a C-9979 landing craft, for when it would be necessary to send droid reinforcements. The Recusant was in total 1,187 meters long. Its bridge was on the front of the ship, like the Providence-class carrier/destroyer, and it contained several small levels within, like the Munificent-class star frigate.
History[]
The Recusant appeared early in the Clone Wars, used to protect the Separatist homeworlds. The ship was constructed on several CIS planets, particularly those controlled by the Commerce Guild. The design of the ship was originally made by the Mon Calamari, but Separatist-aligned Quarren stole the design and the Techno Union mass produced it with materials provided by the Commerce Guild.
The Recusant-class became more common in the war after the small skirmish above the planet Saleucami, where one served as the flagship of General Grievous. Grievous also used them during the third assault on Kamino.
These ships had quite a reputation among the Republic Navy officers during that time. They were used in many space battles, and were particularly effective against the Venator-class star destroyers. During the last stage of the Clone Wars, nearly a hundred of these ships participated in the space battle above Coruscant. That was the largest assembly of them in Separatist naval history.
Later use[]
After the war, some Recusants were used by Separatist holdouts, while others were used by the Corporate Sector Authority. The Alliance to Restore the Republic used some Recusants in the Galactic Civil War. Added construction was done to their hulls so as to accommodate a larger, organic crew.
